    9 Feb 2010 | 7:15 am
There is not too much more I can say about these pens other that they are AWESOME!  If you like the Uni-Ball Signo RT 0.38mm, then you should love the Zebra Sarasa Push Clip 0.4mm as well.  I have one 10 color set to giveaway - courtesy of JetPens of course.  Here are the rules:1. Leave one comment on this post anytime between now, and Thursday night at 11:59 PM Eastern Time.  You are limited to one entry.  Feel free to link this giveaway on your blog, or share it with anyone you feel is a true pen addict.  If you have a blog, I would love a link back, but it is certainly not required…
  • Review: Ohto Petit-B Needle-Point Ballpoint Pen

    dowdyism
    8 Feb 2010 | 4:11 am
I have reviewed a slew of compact pens recently, and since I have enjoyed many of Ohto's full-sized products, I thought I would give the mini-sized Petit-B Needle-Point ballpoint pen a shot as well.  I knew it was going to be tiny when I saw it in the photos at JetPens, but wow, it is REALLY tiny.Sometimes tiny works out for me, and sometimes it doesn't.  In the case of the Petit-B, it doesn't.  Visually, this is a great looking pen - Ohto always does a great job with design.  But from a functionality standpoint, it misses the boat a little bit.  The main issue is that when you unsheath…

  • Review: Uni-Ball Signo DX 0.5mm Light Blue

    dowdyism
    5 Feb 2010 | 4:11 am
As if you haven't heard it enough from me already, the Uni-Ball Signo DX line of pens is once of the best around.  From a sturdy barrel, to clean, crisp line, there is nothing to dislike about these pens.  I don't have a list marked off, but I think I'm pretty close to having tried out all of the colors, and the light blue ranks near the top of my favorite colors list.  It really pops off the page, even on the blue grid background of my Doane Paper Idea Journal.  This year, I am going to work on getting all the different colors of the same pen reviewed, if nothing else to have a sample on…
  • Review: Zebra Expandz 0.7mm Ballpoint

    dowdyism
    3 Feb 2010 | 7:34 am
Office supply stores have shied away in recent years from allowing users to test out very many pens.  I understand to a degree that it could get a little bit out of control, and also that companies have moved to selling pens and pencils in multi packs instead of individually, but it is always nice to try before you buy.  A few months ago, my local Staples brought back a pen testing area on the pen aisle that allowed you to test out three or four different pens, and the Zebra Expandz was one of them.  Well, I obviously came home with one, so does that tell you how effective these pen…

  • The Pilot G-knock 7

    28 Jan 2010 | 6:20 pm
This one showed up in my Christmas stocking of all places. It's funny because before Christmas I wrote:"Dear Santa, All I want is a 1984 Honda CB750 Cafe Racer Motorcycle like this for Christmas. That is all, nothing else, thank you, you are great and say hey to the Elves for me"....and I got a 3 pack of .7 pens. That aside... I had a wonderful Christmas and I am adding the motorcycle to my birthday list (damn you Santa.) I kinda "mehed' on these pens when I first saw them. They had a couple things against them.1. They were .7's2. They were not a motorcycle (bitter much? Obsessed much?)But…
  • I really suck at Countdowns

    28 Jan 2010 | 5:58 pm
Learned my lesson, countdowns sidetrack you. Here I was rolling through the countdown and life came in at number 3 and said "hey, you... you are busy now." So, let's get this out of the way and then get back to the silliness.#2And #1That's a 0.38 by the way. Ta DAAAA! The Countdown is over, Refresh your browser and let's move past this.

  • Top 10 of 2010 #3 Waterman 92

    31 Dec 2009 | 8:17 am
There's a couple reasons why this is so high up on my list. #1 is that I rescued this pen from an antique store where it was sitting there with a ridiculously low price tag on it. The sac was as dry as they come but the nib was something beautiful. A quick shine and it was a thing of beauty once again. #2. It makes me want to use it. Nope not for a journal or a calendar, but to just flow and create. #3...it looks pretty sweet. This is all you need to see. The 92 stamped on the butt. In 1892 Sad Sam Jones, the Major league pitcher was born. In 1992 I was living in Japan surfing my way through…
  • Top 10 of 2009. # 5 and #4

    29 Dec 2009 | 2:31 pm
#5 is simply...Pens in wrappers.....Sing along... These are a few of my favorite things.A pen in a wrapper means something special to me. It's not a fancy box or a felt bag---but it means "pen goodness". It's rare that I find a pen wrapped in cellophane that isn't a favorite or in my rotation. You find these buried in the best part of the Japanese stationary stores and chances are I have worn a hole in the carpet from standing there staring at the various ink color and other selections. (Tester pens almost made this list as well.) These pens are made to be ripped from their plastic and used…

I have a fondness for old wooden boxes, cigar boxes especially. My favorite thing to do with them is to convert them to pencil boxes. Not just an empty box in which to toss pencils into, but a box with pull out trays that hold the pencils in elastic, separating them and thus keeping them safe. I like to do something similar with nylon covered CD wallets and similar type cases. It's fun to create something, rewarding too, especially when I can do it for a lot less that I can buying similar items from eBay.Some time ago I was gifted a broken down wooden cigar box. The top was split and the…

    8 Feb 2010 | 1:34 pm
It’s Monday, you may not be in the brightest of moods…  You stayed up late last night celebrating the most popular non-national holiday of the year, your belt is a little tighter after eating endless amounts of seven-layer dip, on the way to the coffee machine people think you are talking to yourself, when you’re actually just reminding your feet “right, left, right, left…”  Frankly, your mind just isn’t quite working in full-force yet – which probably won’t kick in until Tuesday or Wednesday.  Just to make your day a little bit…

A few months ago I requested a French Ruled notebook from Karen with Exaclair, and she was kind enough to send me one. I have to admit that I was an ignorant American who had never seen this type of paper before so I had no idea what it was used for. I took one look at all of the lines, columns and rows and assumed that it was for keeping calculations. Since receiving the notebook I have done a little research and learned that the French rule is actually a standard paper among French students and that it is a great tool for improving one's handwriting. From Clairefontaine SeyesThis is the…
  • J. Herbin - Cafe Des Iles

    27 Jan 2010 | 1:41 pm
Well, the reader that was considering the Nakahama Sepia has decided to wait and go with Noodler's Black, J. Herbin Lie de The and Cafe Des Iles. He does say that the Sepia is in his future. I did discover something interesting during the entire process. Noodler's Nakahama Sepia is, in my opinion, the exact same color as J. Herbin Cacao Du Bresil. I haven't tested the J. Herbin ink under bleach but the color is pretty exact, maybe it has just a tad more black to it. Thanks for everyone that responded and helped this young man with his ink decision.Today's ink is another brown ink from J.

Many readers have responded with advice and ideas and I had one reader email me with some good ink advice. I asked if I could post his response and he obliged. In response to your request, I've no experience with that ink but with lots and lots of inks in general (and I used to sell pens and inks). It's so easy to fall in love with an intense, deeply saturated color. And if you're willing to never leave your pen filled without use for more than a day or two and you will flush it…

    26 Jan 2010 | 10:29 am
Just home from the 2010 Philadelphia Pen Show, I’ve managed to acquire two pens I wasn’t looking for. This situation is not entirely foreign to me; I’ve been there before. Sometimes the resulting loot is seriously cool, and this was one of those times even though the loot comprises only two pens.First is this pen, made in about 1955. Your task is to identify it.The color is great, the nib is nice, and the two-tone cap puts the pen very close to my favorite “deep blue and two-tone metal” color scheme. (Yeah, it’s a bit too pale in the barrel, but still…) And it has a very nice…
  • The things you can learn

Another title I was considering for this piece of blather was “What goes around, comes around — but not always when you expect it to.” You’ll see why this would also have been appropriate. At the Ohio Pen Show last November, I really had a field day in the auctions. I’ve written earlier about some of my finds, but it’s taken until now to come up with what I wanted to say about the delightful very early Conklin’s Crescent-Filler I bought for $30.00.This pen was oxidized to an olive color, and the nib was missing its tipping; the pen might or might not actually have been worth the…
  • Some days you can’t win for trying

    30 Dec 2009 | 5:08 pm
Every so often I get a string of exciting pens to work on, and the song that comes to mind is the Beach Boys’ “Fun, Fun, Fun (‘Til Your Daddy Takes the T-Bird Away).” And then — poof! — Daddy takes the T-Bird away on the first pen. Today was one of those days.First up was the Waterman’s Hundred Year Pen pictured here. It’s a really pretty pen, a grooved Standard model made probably in 1943 and fitted with a fine stub, and I love Hundred Year Pens anyway. The BR on the work sheet says Basic Restoration, meaning complete disassembly, cleaning, reassembly with a new sac,…
  • Now this is a cartridge pen!

    15 Dec 2009 | 3:24 pm
(Revised January 1, 2010) If you’ve followed my remarks on my collecting philosophy, you know that interesting technology is one of the things that trip my trigger. In the 1950s, cartridge pens were the latest thing. ’52 saw the introduction of the LUS Atomica, a very elegant pen that was the first successful pen to use plastic cartridges, and ’53 was the year in which Waterman wowed the world with its C/F.Well, the C/F wasn’t Waterman’s first cartridge pen. Back in the 1930s, the company had begun producing pens that used glass cartridges. These pens were manufactured in France by…
  • Making nib lemonade from lemon-flavored nibs

    5 Dec 2009 | 12:32 pm
I happen to have a couple dozen Triumph nibs for 1949 Touchdowns in one of my nib boxes. Now, this is all well and good — but since I rarely need to replace the nib on a ’49 Touchdown, these nibs are largely going to waste. On the other hand, I could really use a supply of the longer nibs that fit postwar Vacuum-Fil pens. There are two sizes of these nibs; the shorter ones fit Sovereign IIs, Tuckaways, and the like, while the longer ones fit Valiants and Premiers and other “big boy” models. The longer ones seem to be in much shorter supply (translation: I don’t have any that are…

Erasable File Labels Starter Kit by Label Once File labels are something that we have probably all dealt with, I know that personally I’ve found myself either trying to remove or reapply labels, because I made a mistake when writing on them, and it is usually a frustrating exercise.  The folks at Label Once came up with the Erasable File Folder Labels that I picked up from Organize.com as a way to deal with the re-labeling frustration that we have probably all dealt with when it comes to our home office supplies. Inside the Erasable File Labels Starter Kid made by Label Once The…

LaCie iamaKey USB 2.0 Flash Drive Package One major category of cool office supplies that I’ve been neglecting are office electronics, so when I recently filled my old USB flash drive to capacity, I thought it would be a good opportunity to review whatever new one I decided to pick up.  I remembered seeing these LaCie iamaKey flash drives somewhere a few months ago and I liked the idea, so I decided I would give one a try.  Lucky for me, a friend of mine that I have been helping with a project wanted to get me a small gift to say thanks, and he knew I was looking at this flash drive,…
  • Daycraft Signature Notebook with 100g Paper

    1 Feb 2010 | 2:00 am
The Daycraft Signature Notebook with Aqua Cover and Orange Accents Back in December, I was contacted by the people who manufacture the Daycraft series of notebooks and planners to see if I would try out some of their products and review them here.  At first I was a bit reluctant because they were not yet offering their products here in the US, however being that they are so popular in China, and that they do have plans for introducing these into the US soon, I figured I should check them out.  I was also intrigued because the paper in this notebook is advertised as 100 gsm, putting it a…

OXO Good Grips Highlighters from Staples About a month ago I reviewed the OXO Good Grips Retractable ballpoint pens that are sold exclusively at Staples, and while they functioned as expected I wasn’t as impressed with them as I usually am with other OXO Good Grips products.  With that in mind, I thought it was finally time to review the OXO GOOD GRIPS™ Retractable Highlighters Closeup of the OXO Good Grips Highlighters These highlighters come in 3 packs at your local Staples in either all yellow, or a mix of pink, green, and yellow.  Either of those two options will cost you about…
