Review: Uni Pin Fine Line
5 Nov 2009 | 4:11 amRaise your hand if you have heard of the Uni Pin before. Some of you may have, but this is a brand new one for me. I think it may have even elicited a few ooohs and ahhhs from me when I freed it from its envelope. Yet another pen passed on to me from my friend Carmen (I bet I have over a dozen more to review as well), and another big winner in my book. By the looks of it, this is Uni-Ball's stab at the art/drawing/technical pen market. I know they have the Posca marker line, but do they come in this fine of a point? The barrel design reminds me a lot of the Sakura Pigma Micron, and… -
Review: Lamy Vista Clear Ballpoint
4 Nov 2009 | 4:11 amThis is another pen from the Carmen Collection, and I was very anxious to test it out. Lamy makes some of the best looking pens in my book, but outside of the Safari, I had never really put one to the test in its original state. A Lamy Vista was on my short list to try, so I was excited to see this one make it my way from Europe. As you would expect from Lamy, this is a very well built pen. The plastic barrel and overall construction are top notch, and the moving parts such as the plunger and the clip are solid as well. Lamy has turned me into a fixed grip placement fan, with their… -

Tim Baynes: Moleskines in London
4 Nov 2009 | 8:05 pmUpdate from our friend Tim Baynes' ongoing exhibit, starting with this excerpt from an article in The Times by Alan Jackson:"THE SEA, THE SEA: AN EXHIBITION BY TIM BAYNESJust as waves are impelled to break upon the shore, so man is and always will be drawn to the sea: Artist Tim Baynes feels that tidal pull more keenly even than most. “Whatever the time of day, no matter what the weather conditions and wherever I am in the world, I love being by the water’s edge,” he says. “Be it on the fringes of a city or amid a desolate landscape, whether in extreme heat or biting cold,… -

Certification and Thank You
2 Nov 2009 | 2:00 pmI'm back from a fabulous trip to Grand Rapids last week. The Certification was a lot of fun and I was happy to meet both old and new friends there. When I went to the certification class in Coos Bay a week ago I took my husband with me. He makes videos and in his spare time he made this simple promo video for the store that the class was hosted in - Memories of Time. Here is the nice video he made for Michelle, owner of Memories of Time. What a cute store! I love going around the country and seeing all the different little stores. Coloring a black cat
23 Oct 2009 | 5:20 amHappy Friday! Tonite I head off to Coos Bay, OR for a small Certification class. Before I leave I wanted to give you a quick Halloween coloring idea. Coloring black objects can be tricky, so I wanted to leave you an example of coloring something black that's got some shape and detail areas to it.Coloring a Black CatAround the Copic warehouse live 6 cats that were abandoned and are now adopted by our crew. Four of the cats are all black, so sometimes just walking to the door at work I'll have a couple black cats cross my path, but I never seem to have an unlucky day because of it. Each of the… -

Coloring a sweater
15 Oct 2009 | 6:00 amAs the weather quickly grows cold and wet I figure now is a good time to cover how I color a nice fuzzy sweater. This project will really show you if the paper you like to use is too soft or not absorbent enough. Be sure to work with plenty of scratch paper under your work, as this technique will really soak through most papers.Adding texture to a specific areaIn this image I want the main body of her sweater to look like a knit, but the ribbing on the cuffs should be straight and I don't want her skirt or skin to get textured either. This is where you need to plan ahead. If you add the… -

Wendy wrote:I have just begun to use copic markers, after seeing all the wonderful creations, I just had to try them out. I love them and want to buy more. They are worth the price!! Thank you for a chance to win a set.

Quartet EnduraGlide
4 Nov 2009 | 7:00 pmNot the usual review I guess.I tried one of these markers once (for like 5 mins) and thought they were really cool, but no stores nearby carried these, so I was thinking about getting some online, and I never got them.Yesterday I went to Staples (with the clear intention of getting what I needed, not stopping anywhere else) and noticed that the pens/markers aisle had been rearranged and slightly improved, they had those stations where you can try some pens, and they had a lot of markers and pens available by the unit, including the EnduraGlide (and unlike before, they also had pretty much the… -

More Round Stics
30 Jul 2009 | 1:42 pmAnd as summer progresses, I keep on getting more pens in my collection, and as my travel and hotel stays continues, I've been able to get more Round Stic Pens.It turns out that some Marriott brands are renovating themselves, and with the renovations, comes an increased ecology thing, and more things are made from recycled materials, pens included. They moved away from the traditional white barrels and solid color caps, so the new Marriott pens have a translucent barrel with a dark translucent red caps (please note that it's not completely "clear" like the Diamante or Crystal pens), and the… -

This is partially the reason of my post.If you have followed my blog for a while you might think I just went crazy or something. Yes, I'm well known to my family and friends to be quite eccentric with pens, yes, I have a Pilot G2 Mont Blanc Edition, yes, I order 0.38 pens from JetPens, yes, I spent 15 minutes at a drugstore looking for more 0.05mm Uni Pin pens, and many more yeses, but, everything started with hotel pens. Bic Triumph 537R
24 May 2009 | 12:26 amSo a couple of months back I went to Staples looking for nothing in specific and found some somewhat expensive Bic pens. I decided to think about them and come back later, mostly because of previous dissapointment with Bic pens (including the Z4 leak back in 7th grade). I grabbed a 4 pack a few days later and tried it out. This is one of the few refillable Bic pens (probably the only one unless you consider the 5 cents a piece stic pens, which are indeed refillable, but refills aren't sold -they must be sourced from another pen :|) and after trying it out I decided that it wasn't bad after…

A Lifetime Restored
25 Oct 2009 | 12:46 pmBefore you go any farther, read thisNow that you have a little background info to go by, let's make a comparison:From Lifetime RestoredAs you can tell from the pictures this poor Lifetime had succumb to the years. The clip and nib were tarnished and the barrel had lost some of its sheen. Also, the pen did not write because it needed a new sac. Well, I called on my fellow pen freak and friend Mr. Goodpens for help. He happily obliged because he is a good guy. Never met him. I don't even live in the same timezone as he does but I have a feeling that if I did we would be hanging out on weekends. -

This time it's the Bleu Nuit, which is a black blue color and a nice deep blue. From bleu nuitBleu Nuit is a good classic color to have around and performs well. Eclat De Saphir - My New Ink
14 Oct 2009 | 1:48 pmQuite a few months ago I became addicted to blue ink. I used to be the guy that believed that if you weren't writing with black ink then you might as well not be writing at all. That all changed and now I only get slight urges to write with black, blue is my new black. Obviously, I was excited when Karen from Exaclair offered up some blue ink for review. I requested Eclat De Saphir or Bleu Nuit. Karen, being the kind person that she is, sent both. Around this time I also acquired some Hero 616s and I was dying to try out both the ink and the pens. I like both of the inks but there is… -

Ya gotta love them black pens!
17 Oct 2009 | 12:48 pm(Revised October 21, 2009) This week, of which the primary feature was our successful return from the New York City Pen Show, also offered a remarkably interesting contrast in pens that needed to be worked on. Here I present for your consideration two objects. They are both fountain pens, and they’re both black. This they have in common. From the end of the section back, however, they are remarkably different. And they are both exciting.Of foremost cachet, but not the first to reach the bench — or the more interesting — was this gorgeous Parker Lucky Curve Nº 33 eyedropper filler:The… -
Back In the day, when Montblanc was a pen company...
30 Sep 2009 | 9:00 am…they made truly magnificent pens like this prewar coin-silver safety. When it arrived at the Nashua Pen Spa, its cork was shot. Getting it apart to repair was an interesting exercise because of the way Montblanc put the overlay on, but when it came apart, the more serious damage (a broken threaded barrel-end collar) came to light. It’s all back together now, and I think it should last fairly well. It sure is a gorgeous pen — it has me wondering who Albert Matz was, that he deserved such a fabulous pen.(Sorry, I just couldn’t resist.) -
Something new every day
22 Sep 2009 | 5:20 pmOne of the perennial joys of pen repair is the continual learning process. You think you’ve seen it all, and the next day there’s something new and different. That’s what happened earlier this week, when the pen shown here hit the bench. This is a Penol, made in Denmark by Christian Olsen (who also held the Danish Parker license). It’s an elegant pen, long and sleek and nice in the hand. The filling system wasn’t working. But unlike the Parkers that Olsen made, this is a piston filler with its knob located under a blind cap. Upon disassembling it, I had the following layout of… -
Stealing from the best (part deux), and size does matter
20 Sep 2009 | 3:25 pm“There’s something about designing a pen so that it will appeal to the buyer. Technology alone won’t do it; you can design a phenomenally good pen, but if it isn’t pretty it won’t sell. One way, proven by dozens of tributes and outright copies, is to copy the design of a pen that already does sell.”I wrote the above paragraph early last June. It was true then, and it’s still true now. This week, Jim and I had the pleasure of working on another clone, one that’s even more identifiable than the Punto Rosso I wrote about three months ago.Except for the slightly funky celluloid… -
If I had a club...
25 Aug 2009 | 2:31 pm…and if I knew whom to club, I might have to, umm, oh, never mind. Violence isn’t my schtick anyway. But sometimes, as happened this weekend, I sure draem about it. The incident in question occurred Saturday morning, when I turned to a wartime Sheaffer’s “TRIUMPH” Crest that was in the Spa for filler restoration.(This Crest is mine; the client’s pen, which has gone home, is Golden Brown Striated.)Blithely unaware of the scenario about to play itself out, I took the pen out of its bag and uncapped it. Nice nib. Then I addressed the distal end of the barrel, where I discovered a…

Can I Keep This Pen?
29 Sep 2009 | 8:36 amIt’s a little known fact that I am very fond of office supplies. I like all sorts of pens, but more than that I like blank notebooks to write stuff in. Then, however, I get very picky about what to write in them (unless it’s my diary) and I think they’re almost to cool to be used. Yes, I have issues. Anyway, as I was browsing http://lifehacker.com earlier today, I came across an interesting (to me, anyway) article called Lifehacker Readers’ Favorite Pens. They sure have some nice pens out there! I especially like the designs that seem small enough to fit in your… -

The write stuff
1 Jun 2009 | 7:10 amAnyone remember the Space Pen? The astronauts first used them in the Apollo missions (in fact, the pens are stilled used today) and they quickly became a the “it” item for the geek set back on earth. The pens have also been used as Exhibit A in the case against government waste. The story goes that NASA spent millions developing a pen that could write in low gravity, while the Russians solved the problem by issuing their cosmonauts pencils. But that story is not quite true. NASA did in fact equip its astronauts with pencils in some of its first missions. But pencils were dangerous items…
